Information for Senior Players

1. INTRODUCTION

Cheltenham Cricket Club competes in the ECB West of England Premier League structure. We field 3 Senior Men’s Cricket teams with the 1XI competing in WEPL Prem 2 Glos/Wilts, 2XI in the Gloucestershire County League Div 2 and 3XI in the 6th Div of the Gloucestershire County League. Within this structure we also field U16 and U19 teams that compete in the National Cup T20.

2018 was an outstanding year for our senior teams with the 1st XI gaining promotion to the West of England Premier League’s (WEPL) Prem 1 division. However, Cheltenham CC is aiming to bounce back from a disappointing 2021 with a summer of promotion in 2022.

2. SELECTION POLICY - SENIOR

Who?

The selection committee for league matches is made up of the 3 senior captains – Liam Walker (1st XI), Steff Hunt (2nd XI) and Matt Baker (3rd XI) & the director of cricket, Luke Sellers.

How?

Decisions will be made by a majority verdict with the team Captain having the deciding vote in case of a split decision.

What?

The Cheltenham CC Selection Committee aims to ensure that the club puts out competitive XIs for all senior matches, featuring players that represent the club in the best possible way both on and off the pitch.

The aim of the 1st XI is to win matches. This means selecting the best possible team available.

The aim of the 2nd XI is to win matches and to help prepare players for the First XI.

The aim of the 3rd XI is to win matches and also to help prepare players for the 2nd and 1st teams. The 3rd XI is the bridge between junior and senior sections and the balance of the team should reflect this.

In addition to contributions on the pitch, the selection committee will also consider how frequently a player is available, their conduct on and off the field and their commitment to training. This will apply across all 3 teams.

What to expect from the selection committee…

  • Any player dropped from a team will be informed by the captain of that team via a phone call or conversation in person and a full explanation will be given. This will happen before the teams are published for that weekend.
  • Teams will be published via Pitchero by no later than 9pm on Thursday evenings.
  • No player is undroppable - or unpickable. All players, including the members of the selection committee, can be dropped or promoted to a higher team if warranted by their performance.
  • Where possible players will be judged over a period of time eg a minimum of 3-4 matches rather than on one-off performances
  • Players moving between teams will – where possible – be given the opportunity to fulfil a similar role in their new team. Eg a top order batsman should expect to bat in the top 6.

What we expect from you…

  • Players will only be considered for selection if they have paid their annual membership. This will come into place from the end of May.
  • Players make themselves available for the club - not the team. Refusal to play for a certain team will result in disciplinary action - likely to be a temporary suspension from selection - to be determined by the selection committee.
  • If a player has an issue with a selection decision they should raise it with their team captain or the director of cricket, preferably via phone call or in person.
  • It is your responsibility to inform the selection committee of your availability (they shouldn’t have to chase you). Please use Pitchero & fill in availability as far in advance as possible.
  • If your selection status changes please inform your captain as soon as possible but no later than 7pm on the Tuesday night.
  • Players that drop out after teams have been published (9pm Thursday) without a reasonable excuse eg illness, injury, family crisis will not be selected for the following Saturday.*

*At the discretion of the selection committee.
